If you’re still fumbling with Zoom, it’s time to sharpen your game. Did you know that you can practice your Zoom game? Go to https://zoom.us/test and play around with the settings.
First, let’s talk backgrounds. No one needs to see your laundry pile. Choose something clean, professional, and flattering. The right background should make you stand out—not distract like a neon pineapple wallpaper.
Next, especially as a host, turn on captions and transcript options—they make your meeting accessible and keep everyone on the same page (literally). Some people (like me!) love having the transcript open so we don’t miss a single word. Others prefer to have the chat window open instead of popping up from below (which is distracting!).
Bad lighting is another deal-breaker. If people can’t see your face, you might as well be hosting from a cave. A simple desk lamp or facing a window does wonders. Even a small source of light like a ring light attached to your screen makes a world of a difference.
Psst! Your webcam is the new eye contact. That little white dot in the middle of your screen? Yeah, stare it down when it’s your turn to talk. It’s the difference between commanding the room and looking like you’re side-eyeing your ceiling fan.
And posture matters. Sit up straight, face the computer head-on, and quit slouching like you’re auditioning for “Couch Potato of the Year.” Also, raise that laptop—no one signed up for a chin-hair close-up. Trust me, that angle is not your friend.
If you want people to actually listen to you, look alive, sit tall, and give that webcam the confidence it deserves. And for the love of bandwidth, mute yourself when others are speaking. Nobody wants to hear your keyboard clacking or your dog auditioning for The Voice. Mine likes to bark everytime a leaf falls on the ground or if a crow lands on our lawn.
Bottom line: with a little polish, your Zoom presence will be fresh, sharp, and anything but a lemon. Want to practice? Let’s chat soon!🍋
